Bodywork

Special soft and hard solders with a wide melting range are used for repairing vehicle bodies after accident damage and for the restoration and maintenance of classic cars. The choice of material for the repair process depends on the base materials to be joined and the requirements for a strong, material-to-material bond. These repairs range from cosmetic touch-ups to safety-critical repairs that demand a higher level of reliability. Depending on the application, these brazing repairs are performed using special soft solder and tinning pastes for the automotive body sector in combination with lead-free or high-lead soft solders (so-called “flux-cored solders”) or brass and nickel silver brazing alloys for high-strength joints, along with the appropriate brazing fluxes.

Soldering Techniques in Auto Body Repair – Durable and Professional

In the restoration of classic cars, soft soldering is a time-tested method for ensuring corrosion-resistant surfaces. Hard soldering provides particularly strong joints and can withstand high loads.

Learn more about the two soldering methods used in auto body repair!

Soft Soldering

Dents in a car can be frustrating, especially when they’re deep or hard to reach. There are effective methods for repairing them that not only improve the car’s appearance but also preserve its value. Tinning with FELDER soft solder and tinning paste (Sn97Cu3 and Sn99.9) not only covers unsightly weld seams but also creates a shiny, corrosion-resistant surface. Using extruded rod material such as Sn92Cu8, Sn90Zn7Cu3, or Pb74Sn25Sb1 ensures the production of a high-quality and, therefore, durable vehicle body. Thus, the art of tinning with FELDER solders remains an essential part of classic car restoration.

Brazing

Brazing at the sheet metal fabrication shop is a high-temperature process; joining two metal parts at 900°C is an art that requires not only expertise but also the right equipment and materials. The obvious advantage over soft soldering is stability; brazed joints can withstand higher loads much better. In addition, brazing is gentler on the material than welding. To ensure a perfect joint that stands for high quality and reliability, we offer suitable materials such as brass brazing alloys, CU670 (bright) (UmMplated) or (Gfilled), hard nickel-silver brazing, CU 773 (blank) & (UmMcoated). Using the wires (G1, G2, G3, G4) for general welding applications and the stainless steel welding wire (1.4576) to our product portfolio. Our fluxes universal brazing paste & universal brazing powder round out this application area to achieve the best joining and bonding results.
