Roofing

Weather-resistant materials such as zinc, stainless steel, aluminum, lead, and copper are used in roofing and joined using soft solder to ensure a material-to-material bond. When selecting a flux, care must be taken to ensure its chemical composition (activation) is compatible with the material. For galvanized gutters, unlike pure copper elements, a stronger flux is required to ensure proper wetting. In particular, for roofing systems using decorative zinc sheets with an artificial patina or color coatings, special fluxes with an appropriate etching function are required to ensure an optimal soldering process.

Soldering Methods in Roofing

Soft soldering is a common method for joining metals in roofing.

Learn more about soft soldering and its applications in roofing!

Soft Soldering

Soft soldering in roofing and facade applications is a technique that has proven itself throughout Europe, particularly for flashing and drainage systems. Soft soldering combines precision with experience and requires an understanding of materials and the process. With the right technique and the ZD brazing flux, titanium-zinc, for example, can be wetted effectively. Heavily oxidized zinc sheet, on the other hand, is better soldered using ZD-Special soldering fluid. For special finishes such as “slate gray,” “blue-gray,” or “NedZink,” ZD-pro soldering fluid achieves the best results. ZD-Quartz soldering solution can also be used to solder VM-ZINC, QUARTZ-ZINC, and ANTHRA-ZINC. Other roofing and facade elements, such as copper and stainless steel, can be reliably joined using KD soldering flux and VA-NOX soldering flux. Typically, lead-containing (Pb60Sn40, Pb50Sn50, Sn60Pb40) and lead-free (Sn97Cu3 & Sn91Zn9) rod material is used for these applications.
